SPLENIC HISTIOCYTIC HEMOPHAGOCYTIC SARCOMA IN GOLDEN RETREVIER: CASE REPORT

Abstract

Hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma is considered a malignant neoplasm with a complex, highly aggressive behavior, related to low survival and a high incidence of metastasis, originating from macrophages. An 8-year-old male Golden Retrivier dog with abdominal algesia was seen at a private veterinary clinic and, after an abdominal ultrasound, the presence of a splenic tumor measuring 13 cm in diameter was confirmed. The patient underwent splenectomy with an initial diagnosis of histiocytic sarcoma. Immunohistochemistry was subsequently performed and the markers vimentin, Ib1-A and CD11C were positive for hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma. Subsequently, the patient continued to be monitored with imaging and laboratory tests carried out periodically, presenting chronic regenerative anemia, associated with persistent thrombocytopenia and hypoalbuminemia and even having undergone transfusion and appropriate treatments, there was no improvement in the condition. Although no metastasis occurred, there was significant clinical worsening of the animal within 42 days after surgery, with those responsible opting for euthanasia, and it was not possible to start treatment with adjuvant chemotherapy. Hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma is considered a rare cancer in dogs, with a poor prognosis and low survival after diagnosis, and has not yet been reported in Golden Retrivier.
